Emblica officinalis, or Phyllantus emblica, or more commonly “Amla“ (Indian gooseberry) is a plant belonging to the euphorbiaceae that grows in the forests of India. Its fruits are round green-yellow in color, quite smooth and hard in appearance, with six vertical stripes or furrows, ripen in autumn and are rich in juice. The drug consists of the pericarp of its dried fruits. The main components include tannins (up to 28%), fillembico acid, lipids, gallic acid, emblicol and vitamin C.
In cosmetics Alma is used in the form of oil or powder. Amla is used as an antioxidant and a tonic for skin and scalp. Let’s find out how to use it in skin and hair care.
Amla benefits on hair
Let’s concentrate on the foliage and discover 6 benefits that we can get from the use of this wonderful fruit on hair and scalp:
- the finely powdered Amla powder, applied on hair and scalp, has a tonic, nourishing, restorative effect;
- strengthens hair follicles, counteracting hair loss and stimulating growth;
- promotes pigmentation by fighting graying (therefore also useful for those who suffer from premature hair curls!);
- purifies the scalp by regulating sebum production;
- gives volume and shine to the hair and helps to untangle it: after the treatment the hair will be extremely bright and silky to the touch, easier to comb;
- Amla has no obvious color effects but, mixed with other dyeing powders (henna, indigofera, etc.), makes them more homogeneous and creamy, in some cases also influencing their reflection. The high presence of vitamin C can cause slight temporary redness on some particularly sensitive skins.
Erboristeria Como adds some considerations for you:
- on the skin Amla can give a slight initial redness, due to the high content of Vitamin C: there is no alarm because it usually passes after a few minutes, up to an hour;
- on very light bleached hair it can give a slight darkening: therefore we advise you to do a test on a small head first to anticipate the result obtainable in its entirety.

Amla powder: how it is used to exploit its benefits for hair
To use it on hair and scalp and take advantage of its restructuring, nourishing, purifying and anti-hair loss properties you can prepare an hair conditioning treatment: mix a quantity of Amla powder (from 50 to 100 g depending on the length of the hair) with hot water, so as to forming a batter of a consistency equal to a semolina; let it rest for at least an hour in a container, possibly not of metal. Approximately 190-240 ml of water are usually required for 100 g of powder. Then apply to hair and scalp that has just been moistened, covering it with film and leaving it in place for a period of time ranging from 20 to 45 minutes; at the end, rinse thoroughly. The hair will be extremely bright and silky to the touch, more easy to comb.
If you want to enhance its restructuring action, you can prepare the pack by mixing it with greek hay powder, which has a synergistic action. Also approach it with a nourishing shampoo like this.
To take advantage of the Amla powder as a restructuring product ideal for dry, dull, treated and / or damaged hair, revitalize and untangle the hair decisively you can also prepare an illuminating mask, perhaps mixing Amla with Ziziphus for a synergistic effect. Here you can find a ready-to-use organic illuminating mask, with Amla and Ziziphus extract and enriched with organically grown nourishing oils (Ricino, Hemp, Jojoba and Sweet Almond) restructures the hair making it soft, full-bodied and shiny.

Apply the mixture to your face and leave on for about 10 minutes, taking care not to dry the mask; as soon as it starts to dry, gently remove it using a sponge.
