Topical applications: Maximum cutaneous dose 1%. Creams, ointments or gels with added essential oil, maximum 1%, can be used for problems of fungal or bacterial infections of the skin. For mucosal infections use 0.5% doses.
The oil of santoreggia is known above all for its excellent antimicrobial effects, due to the presence of carvacrol and alpha-terpineol and terpinen-4-ol. It is active on many strains, and in particular on E. coli, L. monocytogenes, Streptococcus mutants, S. salivarius, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and C. glabrata. Of particular interest is its antibiotic activity in odontoriatric infections, against Fusobacterium nucleatum. Other properties of the oil are antioxidant, analgesic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic and insecticide.
