Aloe vera is one of about 420 species of the genus Aloe (Dagne et al. 2000) and one of the best known. Aloe Vera has triangular, fleshy leaves with serrated edges, yellow tubular flowers and fruits that contain numerous seeds. A clarification: in most forms and treatises, Aloe barbadensis Mill. it is considered the correct name of the species and Aloe Vera is considered a synonym. However, according to the International rules of Botanical Nomenclature, Aloe vera is the legitimate name of this species.

What do Aloe leaves contain?

The component present undoubtedly in greater quantity in the plant is water: it constitutes on average about 96-97% of the fresh weight and is distributed in part in the cuticle and in the leaf thread but above all in the parenchymal tissue located in the inner part of the leaf. , where it reaches a percentage of 99%. In the dry substance, lipids and proteins represent the minor fractions, being 3.8% and 7.0% respectively. On the other hand, the quantity of carbohydrates is very significant and accounts for about 70% of the dry weight. Approximately 11% of this share is represented by a fraction of soluble monosaccharides, while the remaining 59% is represented by a large fraction consisting of homo- and hetero-polysaccharides with a high molecular weight, generally indicated also as dietary fiber. Functional substances can be divided into three large groups:

- High molecular weight polysaccharides: mainly represented by acemannans, galactomannans and glucomannans, abundant in parenchymatous tissue located inside the leaf,

- numerous biomolecules of considerable nutritional and functional importance: mono- and di-saccharides, amino acids, glycoproteins, organic acids, phytosterols, substances with hormonal action, enzymes, vitamins and minerals,

- Anthracene heterosides and phenolic substances present in the leaf cuticle, which represent the main components of the so-called "Latex anthraquinone", including aloin.

What are the useful functional substances to be found in Aloe juice?

- One of the components that significantly contributes to characterizing the curative properties of the plant is mucus polysaccharide acemannan. The acemannan is a molecule that is inside the connective tissue. The organism is able to produce the acemannane until puberty after which it must introduce it with food. The acemannan is a complex and rare polysaccharide that is found only in the aloe, ginseng, shitake, shark cartilage powder, astragalus and elutricococcus. The acemannan strengthens the immune system by activating phagocytes, antibodies and killer cells. Furthermore, this substance facilitates the disintegration of foreign proteins, which often cause allergies in the large intestine.

 - Mono- and di-saccharides, amino acids, glycoproteins, organic acids, phytosterols, substances with hormonal action, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Specifically, as reported in "Aloe vera: a short rewiev" -Amar Surjushe, Resham Vasani, and DG Saple, aloe vera contains 75 potentially active components, among which: vitamins (A, C and E, B12-rarissima in nature and indispensable for proper haemolytic function, folic acid, niacin and choline), enzymes, minerals (calcium, chromium, copper, selenium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium and zinc), amino acids (aloe provides 20 of 22 necessary human amino acids and 7 of the 8 essential amino acids).
What are the functional substances NOT to be found in an aloe juice?

Aloin, a C-glycoside derivative of aloe-emodin. It exerts laxative activity by increasing the secretion of water in the intestinal lumen, reduces the reabsorption and stimulates the peristaltic propulsive contractions of the intestinal wall. However, aloin, like other anthraquinone drugs, has side effects: long-term abuse of laxatives can cause alterations in the electrolyte balance, metabolic acidosis, malabsorption, weight loss, albuminuria and haematuria (WHO data).

Why is it important to drink aloe juice?

Today's lifestyles, stress and poor diet have increased gastric disorders such as ulcers, gastritis, colitis and stomach acid. Aloe has important properties that promote proper digestion of food and assimilation of nutrients. Already in Ancient Egypt (Ebers papyrus) the healing properties of Aloe for gastrointestinal disorders were known.

Thanks to natural mucopolysaccharides (mannans), it fights the lazy bowel, improves intestinal regularity, reduces heartburn. Aloe juice also acts on the functions of the pancreas, activates the production of its digestive juices and regulates the activity of insulin by stabilizing the presence of glucose in the blood.

Aloe also acts as a detoxifier, since the gastrointestinal tract is particularly prone to accumulate toxins, and also has a stimulating effect on the liver: promotes liver activity, the elimination of toxins and other substances harmful to the body . Thanks to the purifying effect, aloe vera juice can also promote diuresis and the disposal of excess liquids.

The Aloe also contains, as mentioned above, many vitamins: when you are subjected to fast work rhythms, hyper-connected, with technology and screens always present, you tend to eat badly or skip meals, reducing the daily need for vitamins , but Aloe juice compensates for this need and helps the body to stay healthy. The minerals present in the juice of natural aloe vera-stimulating enzymatic processes- and amino acids-very important for cell renewal, protein synthesis, and other vital processes-such as cysteine-have antioxidant action and counteract cellular aging. Regular intake of aloe juice before meals, among other things, guarantees the daily intake of iron. The same applies to calcium, which regulates cell metabolism and ensures the effectiveness of vitamin C thanks to its ions.

Aloe juice: many on the market, but how to choose one of quality?

Anyone wishing to buy a quality Aloe juice must buy a product of which it is known: the origin of the cultivation (speculations and economic interests, have proliferated cultures of various species of Aloe in intensive cultivation, far from the places of origin ), the production chain, a product certification, the juice container (do not take aloe juice if in transparent bottles!). It is also necessary to make sure that the juice is free of aloin.

There are numerous certifications that revolve around the world of products based on Aloe, but among the various disciplines, the one developed by the IASC (International Aloe Science Council) is undoubtedly the most rigorous, clear and effective. The IASC certification must not be confused with the Organic Product certification: compliance with the IASC standards guarantees the quality and purity of the Aloe contained in the products, while the organic certification guarantees the absence of synthetic substances and preservatives not compatible with the status of Organic Product. In particular, in order to declare a product compliant with the IASC standard, a complex authorization process must be followed, involving the entire production and distribution chain, which concerns: a) the cultivation of Aloe, b) the production of semi-finished products based on Aloe , c) the production of finished products based on Aloe (juices, capsules, tablets, etc.), d) the authorization to affix the declaration of conformity to the IASC standards on the finished product.
